Windsurfing in Greece for extreme sports lovers

Windsurfing is a relatively new, but already very popular water sport that combines the classic surf and sailing.

Windsurfing in Greece is a unique sport.

This type of sport became popular after Nikolaos Kaklamanakis winning at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.  Currently the World Association of Professional Windsurfers organizes annual world championships on the Greek islands, in particular on the island of Paros of the Cyclades group. Competitions are held every summer on the New Gold Coast and attract the most famous champions.

On this island you can find some surf stations where even preschoolers are taught to stand on the water sailing. Night walking on the cozy Paros streets with light colour marble houses, visiting restaurants or sightseeing is a very nice experience. For those who loves the rocks a journey through the caves, armed with rubber boots and a flashlight, with possibility to find a real adventure could be a wonderful opportunity to have a nice time.

Another island suitable for windsurfing is the island of Naxos.

The island belongs to the Cyclades group, famous for powerful wind flows that attract the professional windsurfers. Here is a cozy lagoon which has a length of as much as a mile.

Athletes are aware about the beauty of nature, so that’s why there is located a main surf club island. You can get here by a passing taxi or walking – it will not take more than 15 minutes walk from the center of the eponymous town of Naxos.

The Aegean sea welcomes its beginners with soft waves and professionals with the perfect foam crests and squally wind. It is believed that Naxos is chosen as the surfing platform only by experienced handlers of the sea, but the newcomers here will  also find a couple of water runs, which allows them to train.
