Elliniko: An Important Project for the Greek Economy and Environment

The Elliniko project is the largest urban renewal project to have ever taken place in Greece. It is expected to bring forth a great change that will benefit the locals for many generations to come. Furthermore, it will directly and indirectly create 70,000 new job openings. It will usher the country into a new era of economic development.

The renewal of the old Athens airport is expected to have multiple positive effects on the economy. Apart from the clear development goals, it will also attract significant foreign investment funds. At the same time, it is expected to contribute positively to the fiscal adjustment and the Greek economy.

The Elliniko project will also substantially contribute in turning Athens into a major tourist destination, providing a significant number of accommodation buildings, architectural landmarks and thematic tourism. It will also upgrade and enhance the coastal front of Athens and will eventually lead to the creation of a new 1 km long beach.

Finally, the project is expected to improve the area’s microclimate through the planting of new trees and the creation of bodies of water, while it will also feature a pedestrian and bicycle path network that will extend up to 50 kilometers.
