Greece celebrates International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend today, Sunday, with 23 lighthouses across the country open to the public.
International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend was established in 2003 at the initiative of the International Association of Lighthouse Keepers and is celebrated each year on the third weekend in August.
The purpose of this initiative is to inform citizens about the importance of lighthouses and other naval aids in navigation, as well as the visibility of the work done by the keepers, often under difficult conditions.
On this weekend the lighthouses are open to the public, with various events taking place. This year it is celebrated at 350 lighthouses in 50 different countries. In Greece, 23 lighthouses across the country will be open to the public under the aegis of the Greek Navy.
