Mastic Beer from Greece’s Chios Eyes Global Market

A unique beer from Chios, featuring mastiha, the island’s most famous product, is about to enter the global market and the company is hopeful that the rest of the world will love it, as do the locals.

Stella Dimitriadou, who began work experience in the small brewery in Kambos, Chios as a graduate, perfected the idea of adding mastiha, the natural resin that oozes from the mastic tree, into beer.

It was not an easy task to perfect the consistency and taste required.

Stella is a winemaker and brewer who studied at the Athens Technological Educational Institute, majoring in Wine, Vine and Beverage Sciences.

“This beer is unique in the world, with its velvety texture and a fine combination of yeast and a pleasant Mastic touch that travels you to our beautiful island. It is produced from wheat malt in combination with authentic Chios Mastiha,” says the team at Kambos.

Manos Nazlidis, originally from Piraeus, created the Chios Beer microbrewery in Kambos, on the island of Chios, in 2010.

“Since we bottled the first Fresh Beer of Chios, we were asked to add Mastiha,” he says.

“We wanted to make a unique beer with a combination that had never been tried before. This was done using wheat malt combined with the authentic Chios Mastic, which gives the impression that we have dipped a spoon of Mastic into our beer!”
